Flow artist Riley Hughes is a creator whose passion for flow grew from a love of music, movement, and the incredible community surrounding both. After discovering Flow Stars at music festivals in early 2024, Riley immediately immersed himself in the art form by spending countless hours learning new techniques, practicing daily, and transforming curiosity into a creative lifestyle.
What makes Riley's journey especially inspiring is his commitment to giving back. Through tutorials, challenges, and uplifting fellow artists on social media, he's helping make flow arts more accessible for newcomers while encouraging experienced flowmies to keep pushing their creativity.
When did your journey begin, and how did you fall in love with flow arts?
I’ve always had a love for music and after spending nearly a decade in the electronic music scene, I started seeing more and more people playing with these giant handkerchiefs aka flowstars. Someone was nice enough to let me borrow their star and I instantly fell in love. There was something incredibly cathartic about flowing and I immediately purchased my own flowstar in March of 2024. I haven’t put it down since. I would spend every day looking up tutorials and trying to learn new moves or replicate moves I saw online. Flowing is a daily activity for me and something I genuinely look forward to doing every day.
How would you describe yourself now that flow arts are integral to your lifestyle?
I would say it’s helped me feel more connected to my body and grounded. It’s really something I can get lost in and brings so much peace of mind. I think it’s also been humbling in a way - there’s always more to learn and even if you’re an incredible flow artist, there’s always more growth that can happen. I’m also just extremely thankful. Flowing has been a place of happiness for me and has brought me new connections, friends, and ambitions.
Who or what inspires your flow practice and style?
The flow community is incredibly inspiring and I’m constantly learning new things from both experienced and newer Flowmies even after two years into flowing. You never stop learning or wanting to push the boundaries of what you can do. The creativity is endless. That’s a big part of why I’m passionate about flow, it’s a never ending challenge and always gives you new obstacles to overcome.
Has the flow arts community impacted your life and supported your creative growth?
Absolutely, I attend regular flow events in my city, which has led to meeting so many wonderful people all with their own flow style / flair (and equally great taste in music). It’s amazing that there’s such a deep camaraderie with flowmies and no matter where you travel, you can find your people. Flowing has led to new lifelong friendships, and it’s been a wonderful opportunity to teach others what I’ve learned. When I started flowing, everything I learned was from others who took the time to share tips and tricks so the community has been essentialfor pushing me to get better and better at my own flow.
What aspects of flow arts are most meaningful to you, and what drives your passion?
One of the aspects of flow arts that is really meaningful to me is the individuality - everyone has their own flow and no 2 flows are the same. I think this encourages people to express themselves in a way that’s truly unique to them. There’s something really special about that.
How do you personally define flow state, and what does it mean to you?
For me, flow state comes at a point when your flowing feels effortless, your body anticipates each move and you lose yourself in the experience. And with that comes an overwhelming feeling of bliss where time can stand still and you can be in sync with your flow/self. There’s truly nothing like it and when you’re surrounded by good people listening & flowing to music you love, it’s like everything just falls into place.
Anything else you’d like to share with the community?
It’s been really fun actively working on a flow social media page. Creating flow tutorials, challenges and showcasing other artists has been a wonderful way of connecting with others and sharing my love for flowing. I learned a lot from others when starting out and it feels good to give back. The flow community is superb and I’m so appreciative to have a place in it.
