🌌 UltraPoi Beginner Guide

Beginner’s Guide to Poi Spinning

Discover flow arts, build confidence, learn your first tricks, and choose the perfect beginner UltraPoi set for your journey.

01 🌀 What Is Poi?

What Is Poi?

Poi is a form of object manipulation where weighted props attached to cords are spun rhythmically around the body. Modern poi blends dance, music, meditation, performance, and visual art into one creative practice, while traditional styles of the artform are based in Maori culture as a form of story telling and cultural expression.

💡 Beginner Mindset

You do not need dance experience, athleticism, or perfect rhythm to start. Every advanced spinner once struggled with basic circles and tangled cords. Now is the best time to begin exploring!

05 🎯 Fundamentals

Beginner Poi Techniques

Before learning tricks, get comfortable with the foundations that make every move smoother.

Plane Control

Keep each poi moving on an invisible wall beside or in front of your body. Known as "wall" and "wheel" plane.

Timing

Learn same-time and split-time movement so your poi feel coordinated.

Momentum

Smooth patterns come from relaxed motion, not force. Start slow and build speed for musicality. Faster is not always ideal or more advances, your connection to the music is what's most important.

See the Path

Connecting different moves with corresponding planes, spin directions, or timing helps create seamless transitions and combos.

06 🔥 First Tricks

Your First 7 Poi Tricks

Master these essential patterns and you will unlock endless flow combinations.

1. Two Beat Weave

The foundation of poi spinning. The poi alternate on opposite sides of the body in a rhythmic weaving pattern that teaches timing and directional control.

2. Three Beat Weave

A more advanced weave variation with an extra crossing motion that creates continuous flowing transitions and opens the door to combo work.

3. Buzz Saw

A hypnotic move where both poi spin together directly in front of the body, creating a spinning saw-blade visual effect.

4. Windmill

An overhead rotational pattern where the arms continuously cycle while the poi orbit around the body in a windmill-like pathway.

5. Stalls

Intentional pauses that stop momentum at the top or side of a circle to reverse direction cleanly and add dynamic control.

6. Hand Wraps

Wrap the poi around the hands or arms before releasing back into flow. Great for transitions, style, and adding texture to routines.

7. Archer Weave

A dramatic weave variation where one arm extends like an archer pulling a bow, creating striking asymmetrical movement and visual depth.

Keep Practicing

Once these feel comfortable, start connecting them into short combos with music.
